Community Supported Business Start-Ups (CSBS-U) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting entrepreneurial activity and small business launch and expansion in Northern New York.
CSBS-U serves a funding niche in providing financial assistance through microgrants to residents of primarily St. Lawrence County communities, who have new venture vision, creativity, and specific economic need.
In addition to dispersing competitive grants up to $5,000, CSBS-U is unique in that it offers grant recipients mentoring, training and guidance in functional business areas such as product development, marketing, technology, and financial management, among others, to ensure business sustainability and success.
Not only does the business owner benefit from CSBS-U grant support and assistance, but communities benefit from the growth of new ventures through employment, tax revenues and small business infrastructure.
It is founder Sandy Maine’s philosophy, which underpins the mission of CSBS-U, that a contagious, pay-it-forward entrepreneurial spirit is what makes the North Country unique and holds great promise for the region’s future.
